But, now I realize that smoking in public places encroaches on the freedom of the general public.
There are many reasons that smoking should be outlawed on campus.
1) Its unsightly, cigarette buds are discorded on the ground and it's just nasty.
2) Smoke is irritating to some peoples respiratory systems.
3) Second hand smoke is a health hazard.
4) Colleges are supposed to be positive environments that promote education and the holistic wellness of the student. Smoking has negative health affects and should not promoted in anyway by a educational body. This is the same as alcohol use or drug abuse.
5) Designated smoking areas are covered outside areas that unfairly can't be enjoyed by nonsmokers without exposure to harmful inhalants.
I am residential student. In fact, I have only been to the campus once. But, I have worked in places where smoking was allowed in designated areas. The smoke was really not contained. People smoked on the way into buildings, left cigarette buds lying around, and reeked of smoke. As long as smoking is legal, everyone has a right to smoke if they want to, but no one should have the right to adversely affect the health of another individual.

You make some excellent points in your list! I work at a hospital and one of the employee entrances is right next to a designated smoking area... It is not fair that I have to hold my breath or find another way into the hospital to avoid the second hand smoke. I believe the same can be said about TWU, and I think the list you have provided proves to be beneficial to the argument. I think it is fair to say that even though these rights are provided to smokers, there is a fine line and the rights of non-smokers could be considered under violation. Funny how things work...
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly agree with your post and comments. With so many other public places banning smoking, I would have thought colleges would have followed suit. When I see groups of smokers in a designated spot, it accentuates the fact that smoking is bad for your health. Colleges represent a positive, growing, intellectual environment. Promoting people to smoke does not seem to go along with that image.
ReplyDeleteSince we both have the same view on the subject i will just say that I totally agree. As an individual that has respiratoy problems I just want those whom smoke to ask themselves... What if I suffered from breathing problems I would I feel about others endangering my life. The truth of the matter is adults should be adults and consider other peoples health. very good job on your blog...
