Aging Gracefully?

It is very hard to age gracefully in America. The media bombards use with images of youth as the standard of beauty. There are also many products and plastic surgery interventions to help us "look younger". Magazine articles and talk shows geared towards women present information on looking younger as though it's a part of promoting general wellness. Women are pressured to look young by every aspect of society. Movies project young women as happy and older women as cynical and tired. This creates an environment that perceives aging as a disease, something bad that needs to be treated.

I admit that this has affected me. When, I see an older woman on television or in an ad, I wonder why a younger woman was not used. I'm literally repelled by aging. I don't like to see it in the media. I know this is wrong but I believe that I, like many people have been sensitized in this manner. If women feel this way about other women it more than likely transfers over to the way we feel about ourselves. The only way to change this is to sensitize us to the image of aging. There must be more depictions of older women in the media. Our talks shows have to stop glamorizing youth and stop promoting plastic surgery and other age related interventions. But basically, it has to start with us. We as women must present a positive example to younger women. Older women have to stop coloring their hair. White hair should be considered a mark of beauty and distinction not old age. Older women should be esteemed for their grace, experience, and unique beauty. Also, women must demand to see images of older women depicted in a positive light. Instead of accepting the label that society has placed on older women, we must create our own environment of positivity and appreciate aging.

  1. I completely agree! America praises youth and repulses age. It really makes me mad! Look at our music industry for example. It used to be about talent and ability. Now it is about the "look". We can take a young girl and fix her hair and make up and put a microphone in front of her and she is a rockstar. Someone else writes the music and plays the instruments and when they are off key someone synthesizes her voice. Her record sells because she is young and "beautiful". Our media is full of products to make us look younger. It makes me terrified to get older! I feel like people will look at me differently and my opportunities will be less because I am aged. It terrifies me.

  2. I completely agree! I think we need to change our cultural paradigm. I think our media plays a large role, and as our society lives longer (our lifespans are increasing), it's time we also reflect this shift in our film, television, and advertising. Helping youth value and respect the elderly would also help!

  3. While you make a valid point about the media, I wonder if this really is the most powerful influence on our perceptions of aging as women. I have always been a "people person", and over the different stages of my life have found strength, wisdom, and inspiration in the women ahead of me in age that I have had the priviledge of knowing. I suppose this is where "beauty" truly is in the eye of the beholder. These women have taught me, loved me, laughed with me, and comforted me. They have amazing talents, compassion beyond compare, and limitless wisdom. Beyond their haircolor, waistlines, and wrinkles, I see an undefineable beauty. I cannot tell you in words what their contributions have meant in my life, but I can tell you that knowing them has determined my feelings on aging far more than any magazine or talk show. I look forward to taking my place among them someday, and hope that I will do them justice.

  4. You have made such great points that seem so true. I hear my mom talking about getting a facelift when she can and I am appalled. That is why I always state my goal in Health Studies as "helping people to live longer better while learning to view aging as a life process not a decline". Besides, we can get all the surgery we want to look young but that doesnt make our body young. Women should use the money and time to exercise, eat right, meditate, take yoga, and other activities to improve our total health!

  5. I am very similar to you when it comes to cooking for my family. I love being able to go into the kitchen and prepare something down home and hearty. However I know that not eating pork, limiting our intake on beef, incorporting more turkey, chicken, and fish are the best inimproving or health. Finding new recipes is challenging but in the long run I'm sure a longe more prosperous life will be rewarded.
